I ordered this item on Tuesday with free postage and it arrived on Wednesday!!Amazon - you are wonderfully fast.This unit is incredibly compact: 300mm x 150mm x 60mm high.It has a minimalist look which I really like:. Black glass and black brushed metal finish to the body. It looks and feels like a quality item although this is slightly let down by the badges of Freeview, HD, Rovi and the model number being emblazoned on the front right hand corner in white paint. That let's it down slightly on looks for me.Out of the box comes a remote control, a co-axial cable, a power cable, batteries for the remote, the unit itself and a comprehensive instruction booklet. Unfortunately there is no HDMI cable although this is essential for the operation of the unit - which can only communicate via its HDMI slot to an HDMI slot on the TV. Given that the coaxial cable was included and the HDMI is essential, why not include a short one with the purchase?? We had to go back online and wait 4 days for our cable to arrive without the use of our new toy. At only £9.99 for the Panasonic own brand cable it looks mean spirited to not provide one. Maybe we are simply electronics novices but hopefully, with the help of this review, others will not be similarly caught out.We have therefore only been using the unit for a day so far, but as there were no other reviews I thought I would post some early thoughts. I know that I thought twice before purchasing because of the lack of online reviews on this, and other sites. I will come back later with updates.Once equipped with the correct cables, the unit is incredibly easy to set up. It starts with an automatic set up system where it is possible to put in initial preferences and get going immediately. You can go back in via the main menu and change initial choices later on. Initial set up includes choice of geographic region, security information (name & postcode) & pin selection and wireless network set up. Also power save options on normal functions.In the 5 years since we last bought some TV equipment, things seem to have improved massively in terms of power consumption. There are a number of different settings which can be personalised to keep electricity use down. One option is the use of timed hours for "quick start" - although this option is not available if the unit is connected to the network. There is also a button on the top of the unit, which is a "soft" power button, but it puts the box into a sort of hibernation mode. Other options include sending the unit to standby/low power modes within 5 minutes of a recording ending if no other activity is taking place.The Electronic Programme Guide (EPG) seems to be quite good. There is a picture in picture of the current channel while you look through the guide. It is possible to scroll channel by channel, and also page up/down, but it doesn't seem possible to skip to a particular channel listing by pressing its number as we had on our old system.Recording setting from the EPG is straightforward by pressing one button to take you to an options screen. You can record a single episode or link to record the whole series. Once recorded, the navigator menu plays the recording in a small window while the recording is highlighted. Some people may like this feature but I found it a bit annoying - I know that it will probably cause trouble/arguments about what to view when I am retrieving recordings for my young children. I hope to find a way of switching this off. The programmes also seem to be listed in date order rather than automatically grouping them in subfolders with the programme name as Windows Media Player does. The instructions seem to imply that I might be able to set up my own subfolders for different programme labels/folders/groups, but this seems unecessarily complex. I need to play about with this a bit more to decide what I think about it all.One of the reasons I wanted to get this particular unit was the opportunity to watch Youtube on the TV. My first efforts this evening don't leave me massively impressed. It seems to have a slow connection (although our broadband is normally very fast) and I could not really get it to search properly. However I did manage to set up a pairing with my smartphone (android) and used that to search for items to play. It was not completely clear how to manage the playlist queue from the phone/mobile Youtube site and the connection lag was frustrating. I gave up when the start of one film hung and the remote went unresponsive. I had to switch off the unit using the power button on the top of the base unit to coax it back to life. I will try again shortly, but I don't know if I will be making much use of the Viera network functions..... we will see. For those interested in Skype you will need to order a separate (quite pricey) Panasonic webcam (TY-CC20W or TY-CC10W) in order to use this.Basic pause/rewind live TV seems to work well. The front display highlights if you are in this mode and it applies to all of the channels! Our old system would freeze or rewind a single channel but would lose the settings and return to live TV on channel change. This box means that you can move between channels and remain "in delay" which is clever and so I am more likely to forgive the clunky way in which it enters the "rewind mode" (a break in playback and a short black screen) rather than a seamless pause/rewind that we used to have and was great for catching up with the odd missed comment.Our old system also used to let us move back and forth in skip/intervals but for some reason these buttons on our remote don't work. We can only use the fast forward/rewind option which could be a bit boring if you need to skip long sections of playback or recording. I need to check if I am using this correctly as it seems unecessarily unfriendly.Another key reason we selected this unit was the product description which indicated that it was possible to record one or two channels AND watch Digital TV through the unit. We have still to test this function but are aware that other earlier units can only cope with recording and do lot let you watch TV. I hope this function works out well but as yet we haven't tested it.In summary I think the unit is Ok so far. I like how it looks and some of the functions it will be able to offer. Not so impressed with some clunky navigation features, but maybe that is because we simply need to get used to this unit's little foibles. It seems that none of these gadgets ever manage to be perfect.
