5superbly compact
By B. Hunter
These have been around for awhile with very low power processors too slow for me to have considered. This new one caught my eye when looking for a compact PC as Lenovo have upgraded to the latest intel processors. It now has the power to do all that you need from a PC (apart from the high-end games of course). Great connectivity. Use the HDMI to connect to your flat screen TV and you have a quiet media centre pc that beats any 'smart tv' solution. Highly recommended

4The Lenovo VE71AUK Q190 - 1TB HDD, Wireless Remote And DVD/Blu-ray Combo Drive
By An Sionnach
After much researching on my part Lenovo's Q190 seemed to me to be the best option for a good off-the-shelf HTPC (Home Theatre Personal Computer) that combined a decent sized HDD (hard disc drive), the capability of playing DVDs/Blu-rays, a HDMI output for connection to a Hi-Def TV and a wireless internet connection for browsing. Unfortunately like several others I was deterred from purchasing it from Amazon due to the confusion created by the less than adequate product descriptions. However a careful review of some of the responses left by others led me to purchase the "Core i3. 1TB HDD, Remote Keyboard" version from the drop-down box selection (that is "Lenovo VE71AUK Q190") and I have to say it matches my requirements exactly. This version DOES come with the DVD/Blu-Ray Combo drive and of course a rather good wireless remote/keyboard.Stripped of all the jargon the Q190 is basically a mini-PC, roughly the size of fat hardback novel, that can sit horizontally on a shelf or vertically in a supplied stand (it also comes with a small metal bracket that can be fitted to the back of your TV or a wall, complete with screws, to hide it completely). The 1TB drive gives you lots of space for video and image files though some of that space is taken up by the rather hoggish Windows 8. Otherwise extraneous software is kept to a minimum with not even the usual Microsoft sample pictures or videos to take up your valuable memory (which of course is a good thing). The trial version of Microsoft Office and a few other bits and pieces can be kept if you intend to us the Q190 as a replacement desktop otherwise they can be deleted.Techies might prefer to replace Win8 with a somewhat more frugal version of Linux, XBMC or some other operating system to free up even more space. As it is Win8 takes some getting used to and I'm not sure it suits the intended purpose of the Q190 (but that is a general criticism of Win8 on all non-touch screen machines). That said the handheld remote is quite good (it combines an AA battery-operated, backlit, mini-mouse/keyboard - batteries are supplied) and makes navigation around the machine fairly easy (like using a keyboard-mobile phone such as a Blackberry). However for long-term or detailed use a dedicated full-size wireless keyboard and mouse might be preferred by some. I should note that you will need some sort of keyboard and mouse to set up and use the machine, just in case some are confused. In all other respects it is still simply a PC. So purchasing the wireless remote is probably the best option for most users.Customers here in Ireland will be pleased to know that the remote can be set up under the Irish keyboard option meaning the síneadh fada can be employed whether you are using English or Irish versions of Win8.The actual set-up itself was rather easy: a standard HDMI cable from the PC to the TV followed by some 20 minutes of entering the usual location details, user profiles, passwords, updates and restarts (most of the Windows' updates need to be done manually so Google how to navigate around Windows 8 if unsure - it is very different from Win7 or Vista). No big surprises so far (there was an issue with the Date/Time but that was an easy fix). Connecting to the internet was painless too (though I'd recommend downloading Chrome to replace Internet Explorer). As some might have guessed this is not the fastest device in the world. Expect a slight delay in some tasks (opening/starting programmes, etc.).As for usability the image and sound quality from video files on the machine is fine (including playing 1080p HD video files - I'd recommend downloading MPC-HC x64 or VLC, two good video/audio players). DVD/Blu-ray playback is good too. I might well be investing in a surround sound system to complement both. Attaching additional drives was hassle-free, with no problems reading from a 64GB flash drive and a 1TB external hard drive connected via the back and front USB ports (the latter hidden behind a door), and a 1GB memory card. Streaming from the internet was good too with no issues watching webplayers from TG4 or RTÉ. I haven't installed TOR or similar yet but I doubt there will be any problems watching foreign web services like the BBC's iPlayer. My only criticism, Win8 aside (which might be a matter of personal preference for some), is the slightly noisy fan. I had hoped for quieter but it's not too bad and in most conditions, watching a video file or Blu-ray, it's ok. I've knocked off one Star for that though it should really be a half-star.All in all this is an excellent machine, a true space-saving mini-PC that will work very well indeed as a means of providing an internet connection to your HDTV or providing video and audio playback from local files on its large hard drive or disc-player. The wireless remote is actually quite clever, once you get used to it, and is certainly adequate for casual use. It is also slightly cheaper than from Lenovo itself, even allowing for the (somewhat too high) euro-conversion and British-applied VAT.Recommended.

5Perfect low cost Home Media PC
By mirwin
I received this from Amazon 10 days ago and it makes a perfect low cost Home Media PC. The lowest spec Q190 running XBMC Frodo Media Server software on Windows 8 plays anything I throw at it, including 1080P 3D films (tested on my 47 inch Active LG 3D TV with 3D glasses) and outputs Bitstream for HD audio (my Yamaha Amp reports DTS-MA or Dolby True-HD etc).At £249 ($348 in Amazon US) fully loaded for what Lenovo call the world's smallest PC, I see this as currently the best value full HTPC. (With it paperback book size and 500mb drive, it's also perfect to fill with kids Movies to take on holiday etc).Only downside is slightly louder than expected fan noise that appears to run at full speed all the time, even though XBMC never raises CPU utilisation above 10% (though can only really hear it during the quietest dialogue parts of a film). I can't find a BIOS setting or get any Fan control software to reduce the fan speed.I'm Considering rebuilding it with OpenELEC 3.0 (when it is finally released) so as to reduce boot up time. (As Q190 has Intel 2000 graphics it will support HD audio unlike HTPC's running AMD cpu's with on board graphics).
