Supreme Sound

First, some qualification. This is a lot of money to spend on a home cinema system. Not being someone used to spending this kind of cash on electrical equipment, I researched heavily what it could and couldn't do. I strongly suggest you do the same, and think about what you want it for.Some of the appeal of this system is going to be situational. In my case, I bought it because I already had a Sony TV and knew that this would make connecting this very simple, and I was tired of the tinny flatness from the standard TV speakers.I also installed it in the middle of one side of a very long room, which made it frankly impossible to run cables around to where the rear speakers would sit. The wireless capability in this case was essential for me. It might be that you would invest less for a wired equivalent if that was suitable.Be aware also that if your sofa is to sit against a wall that the wireless receiver needs to ideally sit behind your sofa on the floor. It's not a huge piece of equipment, but it's a consideration. It will work if you place it on a shelf behind the sofa, but then you will potentially have the wires showing - it's important to note that there are still wires from the rear speakers to this receiver unit, and also that the unit needs to be powered (it needs a plug point). If you don't have room or power points nearby, you'll end up running cables anyway which defeats the wireless capability to an extent.Negatives build-wise are few, but do exist. The biggest flaw is the calculator-esque LCD display on the unit itself. The unit is sleek, ergonomic, with subtle lighting to indicate that it's operating. It has a smooth disc eject mechanism and is "side loading" in an inset, which means it doesn't require additional clearance for a tray to pop out. It has inline buttons. It's compact and discreet. It's all-round a pleasing bit of hardware, which makes the addition of the rubbish LCD display in the top right a bit disappointing.It looks exactly the same component as on the entry level Sony Blu-ray player I'd bought about 3 years ago.However, no-one will be buying this to simply look at. The acid test was the sound, which was frankly flawless. Smooth, buttery bass, matched with crisp higher ranges equals a faultless piece of kit. At 1000W you will have more than enough juice for anything you want to throw at it.For music, the richness of the sound really comes through as well, subtle and nuanced for something like classical and crisp and lively for pop or rock music.There's an iPod dock included, but this will generally just draw into stark contrast how inferior your general mp3 files are when playing music on a very very good system unless you have it recorded in a lossless cd-quality format.The system connects easily to wireless broadband, which opens up a host of networked capabilities- the Sony Entertainment Network is interesting, with some on-demand content, but you also have capabilities to access Youtube, BBC Iplayer, but the big plus is to be able to hook up Netflix and Lovefilm quickly and easily and watch streaming movies at the touch of a button.It looks and feels responsive and the menus are easily set out, and the remotes are the standard Sony type, well set out and designed but not for the short sighted or large-fingered...!The 3D pictures from the BluRay were also superb. I was lucky enough to be on board with a Sony offer which released the last two Harry Potter films in 3D as a promotion. I received these soon afterwards, and the effects were amazing.All in all, it's worth every penny for the sound, Blu-Ray 3D picture and general build quality. If you're not an audiophile or can live quite happily with trailing wires, there are probably cheaper (if not better) options.

Came early on the delivery day very pleased with service. Product easy to put together and the set up was easy to do. I was a bit worried it did not have a review on it. As the product was launched in early 2012 it has all the gizmo and have yet to check them out. The sound quality was set up automatically and cannot fault it. The 3D setting sound is the one to go for. So far only had it for a day and so far up to its job. The only downside is the set up menu that was not given much details instructions. Even though with common sense it was easy enough to do. To get the best sound and picture quality it always best to get good quality products. Nothing worse paying big money and getting standard results. Well done Sony in this great product.

BDV-N790W Sony Home Theatre

Ok, I received the product a day early. Which was good as I had that day off work. I won't go into detail about the product as it's all been said. I had a sony surround sound for over 10 years and had never been a problem so my expectations were high. I love the fact I don't have wires trailing around the room. It is indeed a smart nice sounding system. It was delivered on the 19th of November. Very easy to set up. It very quickly downloaded a software upgrade with no problem. Also found my way around the ipod/iphone connection. Set the up the radio and using the supplied mikes, got the sound right. Evening of December 6th it decided to download another software upgrade and it hasn't worked since. No picture and no sound. It will switch on and off. That is all it does. So I will be contacting the nearest Sony center over the weekend. Not a very happy man at the moment. So only 2 stars.Upgrade to 4 stars. I got in touch with Amazon customer support. Could not be more impressed. Hit the ring me back in 5 minutes button and exactly 5 minutes later my phone rang. Ten minutes later a replacement had been ordered and an Email sent with instructions to print off a post free returns label, plus a link to arrange pickup. The new system arrived as arranged. Swapped over the faulty parts and resealed the box ready for collection. After a week the new unit is working perfectly. I'll give it a bit longer and if all ok it will be 5 stars as this system is anything anyone would need.
