Cheap & functional

A year or two ago the market seemed to be bursting with portable DVD and blu-ray players. Not so now, this is one of the few reasonably priced choices left. Thankfully, it does a pretty good job (for the money).It plays just about every format, supports BD-Live (with a network connection), has enough battery life to just about watch a full length movie (provided you don't pause for too long), comes with a power adaptor and has a good range of connections (HDMI for video out, RJ-45 for ethernet network, SD card and USB for portable media). It comes with a fairly substantial remote control that you'd be forgiven belongs with a regular (non-portable)device, although if you're using it on the road then all of the buttons you need are neatly laid out on the top of the player.Construction-wise, it's got a pretty plasticky feel to it. You'll probably want to invest in a padded case to keep it from harm as I doubt it will stand up to too many knocks and drops. The buttons work well enough but don't have a very positive feel to them. The screen stays put through friction when it's open, the drive enclosure opens with a bit of a pop. All of which works fine for not but it doesn't feel like it's something you['ll still be using in 3 years time. Of course, that's a bit harsh of me to say given I've only owned it for a couple of weeks so far... if I've still got it in 3 years I'll come back an provide an update!In terms of design, it's quite chunky although not too heavy. Unlike some of the pricier models the screen doesn't flip or rotate to turn it into a tablet, you've got to use it opened up like a good old fashioned laptop. the buttons are simply laid out with the exception of the power switch which is tucked out of sight on the underneath of the unit - most odd.IN use it works well enough - the screen isn't true HD so if you're playing blu-ray they will look OK but not breathtaking. That said the 10.1" screen is a decent size with good brightness. It's also got a reasonable viewing angle so a couple of people can watch at the same time - handy if you're on a bus/train journey - I'm not convinced you'd have enough space in front of you for two people to watch on a plane unless you got lucky with seat allocations. The colour saturation on mine is a bit over the top and, while it is possible, the menu system makes adjustments really awkward as you can't adjust the picture settings while it's actually playing anything which means you keep having to dive in and out of nested menus to get it how you want it. Hopefully this should only be something you need to do once though.The drive itself is a bit noisy when spinning a blu-ray, so it's best used with headphones, noise-cancelling ones if you can to take the edge of the drone of a spinning disc. It sounds like I've got a real problem with this poor little player. I really don't because look at the price and then look at what else there is on the market. For the money, this does everything you're likely to need and as well as you're likely to need it. Sure, there are things that could be improved but they're forgivable at this price.

Good Little Gadget

What an excellent little piece of kit this player is. Small, but with a good sized screen. Crystal clear picture, and a price you cannot fault. Thank God I found this, as I had given up on the idea, and spotted this item by chance. Cool outside, Sony inside, who could ask for more? Not me! Thank you for making my day.
