4This box is very brilliantly good Charlie... :)
By Griff
This is a review for the Sony BDVE370.CEK 5.1 ch Blu-Ray Home Cinema System as listed on Amazon.co.ukSo, we said to ourselves... "We really need to replace our broken down surround system, what should we get?". Well, I'd wanted something that could bring together all my media needs for a while and so thought this the perfect opportunity to look in to what was new on the market!Almost straight away I stumbled upon this Sony BDVE370 player because, well, it had such good reviews and appeared to do everything! It had 5.1 surround, could play Blu-ray, was 3D ready, could up-sample DVDs, Stream media from the internet and your local PC, and had a wizzy interface... Could it be the perfect home cinema system?Well, we bought it and now I can tell you what I think.1) Installation - No issues here, unpack it, plug it in and off you go. For those that are interested the speaker cables are very thin, the front ones are 3m each and the rear ones are like 8 to 9m I'd say? (These were not long enough for my room, so I had to splice `em!). There is only one power cable required for the whole system which is a boon. The included sound calibration mike then helped to get everything, umm, calibrated! I did however decide to drop the subwoofer down by 2db as it sounded a little over powered compared to the satellites.2) Connectivity - I did not want to go down the route of buying Sony's wireless dongle, so I bought a homeplug networking kit. Was mildly worried about whether it would work, but it's just great and from the moment I plugged it in it has worked flawlessly (At £40 for a pair or reusable network points it was a no brainer). Hey also, don't forget to buy an HDMI cable ;)3) The Interface - The Sony interface (that scrolling bar of options) is a strange beast in that it is unlike any other interface, and as such might take some getting used to. However it really didn't pose me any threat and it looks nice :). One thing to note is that after the initial firmware upgrade, and after connecting a hard drive / USB stick, and setting up my PC for media streaming, the video menu of the Sony player is quickly filling up with options... I hope this won't get too confusing for people wanting to use my player when I am not around.4) The Sound - Oh, it's lovely having the surround sound working again. We've watched a couple of movies and are not disappointed. Like I said, I needed to drop the subwoofers volume by 2db as otherwise when the sound moved down from the satellites to the sub there seemed to be sudden increase in volume and this discrepancy bothered me. Once this one done however things seemed much for fluid. The high notes do not scream and everything sounds clear. Volume wise it is quite capable, but does not go stupidly loud. We find that we have the volume level sitting around the middle mark most of the time. I noted that the sub-woofer does not go down quite as low as our previous sub, but then this one is passive and so this couldn't be expected... shame, but never mind.5) Internet Video - Not much to say here, in a good way... It worked brilliantly and I look forward to watching much more iPlayer that I have in the past. It integrates with the remote so it feels just like watching a DVD (e.g. the pause, play, stop, rewind and fast forward buttons all function from the remote). All I want now is the channel 4 to get on the band waggon!6) Local Video Streaming - I was excited that windows 7 detected the Blu-ray player straight away, and I was able to open windows media player and right click an album and select "play to". In a matter of seconds the album was playing on the surround system in the other room... What's more I could pause and skip tracks by walking next door and using the remote. I was then rather disappointed to find that trying the same with photos and videos... Unsupported format it said - Cuh! Well, the happy news is that after a little research I have got all my mp4's and div-x's streaming by installing Serviio (a free DLNA media server). I tried a few alternatives with mixed results, but this one seemed to make a good backing from a number of people with the same player. The main quirks are that the Sony player does not support CD or DVD covers (a big shame as that would have helped my kiddies when browsing the lists of films & music, and would have looked nice). Also an mp4 video had to be transcoded on the fly to an mp2 video to be streamed, and yet if you put the mp4 on a memory stick or removable hard disk and plug it in directly to the player then it can be played natively... The upshot of this is that to save your PC from doing lots of extra work it would be much better just to stick all your files on an external hard disk and keep it plugged in to the back of your Blu-ray player.7) Conclusion - So, does it do everything? Straight out the box it does an awful lot right. The sound is good, the Blu-ray & DVD playback is crisp and smooth. The internet video works well and is very well integrated and really feels a part of the TV experience. DLNA Media streaming is a little disappointing out of the box as Sony's / Microsoft's implementations don't appear to talk very well to each other, but with a little help from a 3rd party DLNA Server (i.e. Serviio) things can at least be got to work well (even if your media requires transcoding for no real reason). Would I buy this product again if I knew what I know now? Yes I certainly would.

5Outstanding - both Value and Quality
By Chief Smeg
I have owned this setup since September 2010 and I am still at a loss to properly describe the quality of this unit, Stunning and Outstanding do not even come close.I have recently been struggling to find a decent Blu Ray homne cinema system. I first bought the Samsung HT-BD1220 2.1 ch Blu-ray Home Cinema System and had to return it because of excessive fan noise. Next to be tried was the LG HB354BS 2.1 ch Blu-ray Home Cinema System - this too suffered from some fan noise but also seems to have been abandoned by LG as far as firmware updates are concerned - luckily I was able to return this to the company I bought it from due to a technical problem with they system. I thank the day I bought the Sony - it really is in a whole different league. The previous 2 systems I had tried were 2.1 because of the price issue - I did not have a load of money to spend, however on the return of the LG I spotted that the Sony had finally dropped to a price that allowed me to buy it.Now for the review...Setup was simple - the Sony comes with a calibration mic that meant the system sorted out its own speaker distances and levels. Took about 2 minutes. Job done. The speaker cables are plenty long enough and have proprietry plugs on the end that connects to the player - these are colour coded to the speaker backs and so it is not possible to get this wrong. The speakers are small and unobtrusive but don't be put off by their size, they pack a powerful punch when needed. Sound is just superb. I can fill my living room with the sound of a movie without bothering my neighbours (which I am sure they appreciate), the Sub Woofer bass does not boom like some systems, it simply does the job it is supposed to do, voices are clear and I swear I am hearing things in my movies I have not noticed before. I have connected my Samsung UE32B6000 to this via an optical connection and listen to the normal TV through it - perfect.Picture quality is the best I have yet seen on a blu ray player - the DVD upscaler is very good, but as with all upscalers, they are simply not in the same league as the true HD that you get with Blu Ray.The Remote is smallish but not cluttered and it can be set to turn on my Samsung TV - which is a nice touch. The build quality of the remote is fine too and it sits quite nicely in the hand for all operation.Connectivity is good especially if (like me) you have connected the system to the internet (wired connection to my router although you can buy a sony wireless adaptor) - I am automatically notified of any firmware updates, can watch iPlayer, 5 on Demand, YouTube, DailyMotion and many many more (the only problem with this though is that the remote is not the best way to type in text - it uses the same input method you would for texting on a mobile phone), I have even found a free app from Sony that allows me to use my ipod touch or iphone to operate as a remote (that way I can use a conventional keyboard).I can connect my iphone or an ipod to the system via a front USB socket and listen to music (and you can control things with the remote) - unfortunatly you cannot watch videos from your ipod, but this was not a deal breaker for me.Fan noise - what fan noise? As mentioned earlier I have 2 different systems by Samsung and by LG and both suffered from excessive fan noise (the Samsung was so bad you could hear it over the top of some dialogue), the Sony is as quiet as a mouse, if you park yourself next to it after it has been runnig for an hour, you will hear the fan, but you have to be right next to the unit when the room is silent - basically if you have ever suffered from noisy fans in a unit then you can rest easy. This really is fantastic value (I paid [...] from Amazon) and it will tick all the boxes for a 5.1 Home Cinema system if that is what you are after. My only regret is that I never bought it sooner.

5Simply the best Blu-Ray home cinema system.
By Soundman
I purchased this system after reading the highly complimentory review in "Which" magazine, and reading the reviews on here. However it was with a lingering sense of "have I ordered the right thing" that I waited for it to arrive. Arrive it did, it was easy to set up cables and speakers all colour coded, but DO use the calibration mic to set the speakers up, it takes a few minuetes but essentail if your going to get the best from the surround sound, also if your not able to place the speakers "symetricaly" in your room the speaker set up will allow for this. I also used very high quality HDMI/Optical/LAN cable for the internet setup. How good is it? Well this Sony system is "absolutely awesome" sound quality and picture are just amazing, The DVD "upscaling" feature on your existing DVD's is likewise very impressive, giving you a far better picture and sound quality on your existing films etc, It plays Audio CD's with a crisp clear uncluttered sound, classical music sounds as though your in the middle of the orchestra, and every thing is just terrific. I have viewed systems three times as expensive and they just dont compare to this product, if your looking to buy a Blu-Ray home cinema system then get this one (it's on an even better offer now than when I purchased it, still I dont mind the few quid difference) trust me you will NOT be dissappointed.Saving Private Ryan on Blu-Ray full Dolby 5.1 Surround sound is an experience not to be missed.Do I recccomend it? Most certainly, a resounding YES!
