5Oppo rumours BDP95
By John Walsh
There has been a lot of stuff said about DSD and PCM and universal players not being the very best when it comes to Hi Bit rate Audiophile playback of music in DVDa and SACD and as such uni players have had a bit of a hard time recently CAM Audio 751 etc.I owned a Arcam DV137 for years and swore by this little machine for sacd/DVDa playback , however after deciding that it was about time for an upgrade i got interested in DSD this being the native format of SACD , looking around for a DSD DAC though was like pulling teeth they were either too darn expensive or non-existent like HDMI DACs.I finally brought a Cambridge Audio 751 took it home wired it up set it up and was grossly disappointed it sounded worse than the Arcam I checked all my sets up and no, all was great and correct so can't be me I thought! finally whipped it back to shop and reinstalled the Arcam and kept looking , months later after humming and ha ring over the reviews of the oppo BDP 95 I thought to myself , Yes but i heard all this before about the Cambridge. Now my system built up over the years while not the best Hi Fi in the world is nonetheless quite a way up the pecking order being Cyrus 8XP and 3 x8 powers working though PSXs and another Cyrus 8vs for mulit channel pumped into 5 x Spendor SP2/3Rs all round, so can be bit unforgiving of strange hardware ordering it about, so i spent the next few months searching for DSD dacs like it was an obsession but finally after must frustration and totally mentally drained I pressed the BUY button on the Oppo BDP 95When it arrived I took it out the box and looked at it for a week as was busy a work and more than a bit cynical about what i was going get when I plugged it in and ran though the set-up , read though the manual which was s surprisingly clear and concise for a week then finally installed it and ran though the set up the following weekend .When i switched it on the HDMI 720 old beast i use as a monitor ( I'm an Audio Freak not a picture movie boom boom fanatic) the unit immediately connected to my network and said new firmware available do you want it , I said yes and went and made a cup of tea when i got back it was off , switch back on ,all done ! Mumbled to myself blimely that was quick, fired the thing up and entered set up .The set-up is a breeze that even a baby would understand and made my second movie system receivers set up procedure look like the space shuttle pre fight checks, after setting up all the speakers and trims and distances I was very pleased to see DSD over analog 7.1 was indeed not only possible but the norm on this sabre dac players ( knowing this dac is basically a DSD Dac)Decided to trial an SACD of Telarc Kunzel clips with a track I know so well that i could, let's say, compare the expected small differences in detail and performance with the Arcam.Banged the play button! After the music stopped I got up and had a stiff drink as I realised that all my prejudices and cynicism over the last few months had just been blown out of the water this player in DSD Anal log mode multi-channel had just introduced not only this piece of music on this SACD for the first time but also introduced me to my speakers and the rest of my system . it seemed for the first time I realised just what sort of sound quality that my system was capable of reproducing , even my tone deaf wife and daughter came into the room asking if i brought a new system.I not going to go into all the "what hi fi" nonsense about sweeping dynamics and attacks and pure sweet this and that, suffice to say that this OPPO is the biggest single leap in sound quality I have experienced since I first heard my friends Hi Fi for the first time when I was 14 and I am now 58 and it's called sabre 32 DSD dac and a Rotel Power supplyI could not recommend this player for audiophile playback more, and it's quite good on blue ray pics as well if you like that sort of thing. Now I going to replay the rest of my sacds and dvdas that i obviously haven't been hearing properly for the last 8 yearsJ R WalshMaidstone , Kent

5Great Machine, Pity about the price
By CLIVE197
Received the machine yesterday, plugged it in and went through all set-up menues. Put a Blu Ray disc into machine and sat back. WOW greatest picture quality I have ever seen on both Blu Ray AND DVD. Also tried SACD via the analogue outputs and heard the best sound I have ever heard from this medium. CD sounds nearly as good as my CYRUS player and that's saying something. Also tried a region 1 DVD which worked perfectly. All in all a great machine.DOWN SIDE: Amazon selling this machine for £1299 or £1399???? is a RIP OFF even with Multi-Region on Blu Ray. Most but not all Blu Rays are region free anyway. but paying an extra £400 0r £500 for this feature is well over the odds. I was offered this upgrade for £199 if required. I had the DVD Region coded free and was told this only takes a few minutes.
