The STR-DH820 will not incur buyers remorse!

I have owned a Sony STR-DE845 Receiver for 9 years which is a US version that I use with a small step up/down transformer at home for my HT System. I use my receiver with a Harman Kardon HKTS-11 5.1 speaker system....I kid you not this system still has the ability to make me grin like a kid when watching action movies, an extremely loud and powerful combination.I have decided that I would really like to move with the times and get something with a dedicated iPhone connection and HDMI capability and so with great trepidation and after reading 90 Gazillion reviews bought myself an STR-DH820, I kept my DE845 under the bed as I could not honestly believe that the 820 could match it at this price range, I mean honestly....all that tech for just £250.00? something must have been sacrificed somewhere right? well if it was I am not sure where because this receiver is amazing and even though I only unboxed it yesterday (Yes I am one of those people that will sit playing with new gadgets until he has discovered how to do everything!!)I have managed to successfully connect my Freeview HD box, my BD player and iPhone 4 and have got them all working properly.Oh just out of interest I have it hooked up to a 4 year old Panasonic TH37-PV70 AZ (37" Plasma) which I love to bits and will not replace anytime soon.The STR-DH820 is a gorgeous looking unit that belies its modest price tag, so far I am loving the following points about it:* Auto volume levelling to reduce annoying advert volume increases* Sound optimiser which discretely boosts low audio at lower volumes, very cool except it remains in the display window and wont go away until the optimiser is switched off?* Sheer power, very loud with a good spread of volume relating to the rotation of the volume dial* Crazy amount of useful connectivity on rear and front panels......internet NO but I dont want it anyway* Programmable remote with a good choice of manufacturer codes supplied* Comprehensive and simple to use remote, although it is a bit long* A decent sized dot matrix display, not skinny and hard to read like some cheaper modelsOverall I am very happy and feel satisfied enough to part with my beloved DE-845 at last. If the limited functionality of the internet feature on the STR-DN1020 is a big pull for you then great, but for me the 820 is a better deal as it is identical in 99% of the features except I believe for the included iPod dock which is where most of the extra cost lies I think. I simply use my iPhone 4 as my internet radio using Tunein Radio which sounds fantastic (especially if you have an unlimited internet plan) not forgetting as well that the DH-820 also charges your iPhone whilst it is connected by USB.Absolutely brilliant deal........I am confident you will not experience any buyers remorse.

When selecting my new AV receiver I was looking for 4 HDMI inputs which the Sony STR-DH820 provides. Having used it for a few weeks I can say I am well pleased with my purchase, once I realized the need to replace my passive subwoofer with an active version. The quality of sound it produces is first class and I have found it easy to operate with many useful features.

Excellent, but complicated

I've got this connected via Bravia Sync to my Sony TV and to Mordaunt Short Alumni 5.1 speakers - the sound is awesome! The setup is complex and cannot be done without the handbook that comes with the receiver, hence losing a star. Now it is setup though it is certainly a 5 star system. I love it, but I'm not sure the neighbours will.One thing to note is that I need 2 cables to my TV to get sound out of it (as my TV does not have ARC - audio return channel, via HDMI). The 2 cables I need are;1. HDMI, to carry video2. Optical cable, to carry the audio (if the TV has ARC you do not need this cable) - bought one of these on Amazon for less than £5.I love it! It's just the setup I didn't love.
