BD-ROM + CD/DVD-RW Combo with Decent x12 Speed
By Kaio
When you open the box, you'll find only two items: one model iHES112 BD combo drive and one SATA cable. That's all; no manual, no software disc. The box is also plain brown box with Amazon sticker showing the product name (LiteOn 12x BD Combo bulk) and the ASIN code (aka catalogue number). This very unusual packaging got me a bit intrigued and I did a quick [re]search, and didn't take long to find out the following facts:- This drive is a BULK or OEM version, which means it doesn't come in a RETAIL package that has bits of extras and features with colourful box. It means resellers with a big clout like Amazon, or manufacturers who put this drive in their equipment, buy this Bulk version drive in big quantities. No wonder it arrived in a plain brown box.- The Retail version of this drive goes by model name iHES212 (versus iHES112 for this one). You get extras like software and colourful box, but the significant difference is that the Retail version supports the LightScribe technology which allows the drive to write label directly on the disc (by using laser itching on discs that support this technology).- Both models were released in or after May 2011 which means these are relatively very modern drives.- The price for the Retail version here on Amazon is upwards of £57.99 - e.g., LiteOn IHES212-31 Internal 12x Blu-ray Retail Combo System- so you save about a tenner for picking this no-bells-and-whistles OEM version. If you're buying the BD drive for home use, and you do not already have a BD movie player, you may like the Cyberlink BD software that comes with the Retail version. Furthermore, if direct disc labelling is of some use to you, again the Retail version will be a better bet, but note that with both drive versions you can only write on CD/DVD discs but not on BD discs (drive is a combo of BD-ROM + DVD-RW + CD-RW); (in theory you should be able to label BD discs since the laser itching is not dependent on the media type as long as LightScribe writing is supported by the disc).I am buying this drive for use as a simple optical drive with a computer, for accessing software and data on BD-ROM, DVD-ROM and CD-ROM (I should add in addition to another BD-RW drive - for home use). In this case, even the DVD-RW is not important to me but happened to be there with 12x speed drive which is a decent speed to have. For instance, there is cheaper version - LiteOn IHOS104-06 4x Internal BD-ROM Blu-ray Bare with Software - with drive speed x4 but opted for this x12 drive (and along came the DVD-RW I never needed). In conclusion - if you want this drive for home use such as BD movie playing on your PC, and don't already have BD player software, you may like to consider getting the Retail version instead. If however what you want is an optical drive for use with a computer, this drive could provide a good solution.I am knocking off one star because the price differential between the Bulk and Retail version, in most situations, is not wide enough to justify foregoing the LightScribe feature + BD software bundle that come with the Retail version.

It’s ok is right
By A. Culverhouse
If your just playing Blu-Rays this is fine. I got this because I needed a faster drive as my 4x was not cutting it any more sadly this drive is actually only 1x faster than my 3 year old 4x drive (same make). Even brand new disks only run at a maximum of 5x so if you’re using this for archiving your disks it’s not really good value for money. From ISO to disk on the same PC I can get 25-40x so the issue isn’t the interfaces or the PC its just a disappointing drive. Please note that this is a Bulk (OEM) unit as in the description, for those that don’t know this always means that no software is provided, so if you need some do some research on the current versions and then order it at the same time. Mine did some with a sata cable which to be honest I wasn’t expecting.

Great for the price
By Mr. Pavandeep Aneja
This may not be the best Blu Ray drive on the market, but for £45, i can't complain. It does exactly what it says on the tin. Reads CDs, DVDs and blu rays really well, not too loud. Comes with red SATA cable which is nice - not sure if its SATA 2 or 3, but im guessing 2 - but overall great buy, the only other one i would consider for a similar price on Amazon was a Pioneer one for around £50 which i would have got, but it was out of stock.
