Samsung BD-F8500 Smart Bluray player with 500Gb drive

The drive integrated well with my Samsung TV and the program guide and vie or record scheduling worked well. There is, however, poor "lip sync" on the direct TV which is worse on the recordings and can be annoying,Otherwise this side of things OKDVD Bluray player - Can't say much about this - it just works.Smart hub. You will require to download the full instruction book from the web to get anywhere. - Plenty of apps for the purchase of films. The usual social sites are included. iPlayer is there but not the regional ones like STV. The web browser works BUT using the remote control to type in destinations and passwords is exceptionally slow and tedious. Fortunately my remote keyboard and mouse solved this problem.Big miss is Skype which I use frequently by connecting my laptop to the TV. Samsung seem inconsistent in which sets etc. they supply this app for.Allshare worked with my old desktop TV but NOT with a fairly new laptop. I(t should be possible to link with Dropbox and Skydrive but I had to use the browser to do so. I tried mirroring the screen of my galaxy s3 to the TV. It worked but not very well - it kept dropping out.Still a good buy but Samsung needs to tidy things up a bit

Terrible UI, horrible user experience

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/review/R1QYCVD8UXM3SL As a Brit, now living in Switzerland, I bought the Samsung BD-F8500 Blu-Ray for two things: watching Blu-Rays, and giving me a friendly way to record programmes via my cable service's CI+ card.First impressions are good. It's a good looking device, with it's right hand curved side, and is cheaper, less bulky and has a bigger hard disc than the "Samsung BD-E8300" model which it's replaced.Some users complained about the high noise level of their Samsung BD-E8300 device. You can hear the BD-F8500' fan when it's in use, but it's not too distracting. I'd say it's comparable to having a reasonably quiet desktop PC's fan.That's the good news.The bad news starts when you open the manual, and you realise this product isn't quite ready for release yet. Even the latest version of the manual on Samsung's website (April 2003) is barely useful, and often contains badly translated instructions .For example, the "TV Guide" instructions are summed up in one line: "Provide programme information for each channels [sic]." That's it. Or for the "Edit Channel" function, "It is provided to edit functions for channel [sic, sic!]." That's pretty much the level of support you can expect for this product.You wouldn't pay this money for a regular Blu-Ray Player, so I assume you'd be buying it for it's PVR and CI+ features, and would expect it to perform this function well. It doesn't.When I first setup the BD-F8500, I made the mistake of letting it search for digital channels with my CI+ card already inserted. Bad mistake. I wasted about two hours, trying to work out why all of my channels were marked as Scrambled, even the ones I had subscribed to (like the regular BBC channels).Eventually, I found out that you MUST let the BD-F8500 do it's Auto-Tuning WITHOUT having a CI+ card installed. Once it's finished, turn it off, put your CI+ card in and then turn it back on again. Only then will it attempt to do it's authentication on your card, and allow you to watch your channels. This could've been documented somewhere... but wasn't. Not a great first impression.Next issue. Previously, when I had used my CI+ card in my Sony TV, it found all the channels, and gave them the channel numbers which my cable provider had given them. So, for example, all of the English channels were grouped together, all of the radio stations were grouped together.With this machine, forget it. It found all of my 350+ TV and Radio channels, then ordered the entire list alphabetically (happily mixing the TV channels with the Radio channels), then chose the channel numbers itself, starting from 1. It's a complete mess, and means you're left to reorder them into something sensible yourself.Setting the Samsung to record a programme is straightforward - you can press the "Guide" button on the remote control to bring up the TV Guide screen, navigate to a programme, hit the Record button, and it will record that programme. Easy.But, to actually see the list of your recorded programmes takes about 30 seconds, and 7 keypresses:- Home- Right twice, to move to "Photos, Videos & Music"- Right three times, to move to "Recorded TV"- It then asks if you want to watch Recording TV programmes from the internal HDD or from a USB device, even if you haven't got a USB device attached (!!)And then, finally, it shows you an ugly tiled list of your recordings. Thumbnails ? Really ? What's wrong with just showing a friendly list of programme names & date/times, with the most recent recordings at the top ?It's unfortunate that Samsung didn't just add a convenient "Recordings" button on the remote control, to immediately jump to a list of your pre-recorded programmes. Instead, they added less useful buttons for the web browser, for Social TV, Smart Hub, etc.Deleting a recording is also a chore, needing to you to scroll to the "Options" menu at the top, select "Delete", then tick boxes for the recordngs you want to record, before scrolling back to the top menu bar to select the "Delete" button. Add all that up, and you've just had to press over 10 buttons on your remote control to delete one recording. This is truly a terrible user experience.Note that there is no option to record an entire series, you must set the timer to record each programme individually.Samsung proudly claims that with this device, you can "record two shows at once and watch them later". Errr, not with a CI+ card. I was watching one channel, the timer kicked in ready to record from a different channel, and my original channel just disappeared, saying it was Scrambled.One final problem - ignore the "dual core processor" advertising about this machine, this is, by far, the slowest Blu-Ray player I've ever owned. Previously, my PS3 would happily let you quickly skip from one scene to the next on a DVD disc. This does the same, but painfully slowly, with the LED display flipping between HOME and PLAY as it tries to work out where the next scene is on the disc.It took just over one minute to go from turning on this device, to getting to the title screen of my Blu-Ray copy of Avatar.On the bright side, the machine does look good, does have links to BBC iPlayer, Netflix, etc, but all in all, I thoroughly regret buying it, and will probably go back to using our PS3 instead. It simply seems to badly stumble through performing each of it's features.Edit:I've now attached a video of what happens when we try to "resume" playing a DVD - in other words, pressing Home, then the Play button to watch a DVD. The BD-F8500 starts grinding away, ignoring any attempts to press the Eject button. This happens with most of our DVDs, even if we clean them. If I yank out the power cable, and plug it back in, the DVDs will play normally, from the start.This is a seriously terrible machine.UPDATE:After 3 weeks of suffering, and hoping it was "user error", we got our local authorised Samsung deal to repair it, under warranty. I show them the attached video, and explained to them that it happens on ALL DVDs and Blu-Rays.When you first play any of these discs, no problem, they'll play beautifully. But if you stop, turn off the machine and try to resume playing the discs later, you get the "scraping" sounds as shown in my video for about 2 minutes.A week later, the machine came back again, saying they couldn't reproduce the issue (what ?!), and perhaps we had a fault with one particular disc...?I stand corrected.This is a seriously terrible machine, which comes with a terrible warranty.I would seriously put it on eBay today, but would just get grief as soon as the buyer started using it.
