Pretty Good
By 6th Former
I brought this item six days ago and it has been working perfectly since. Its incredibly light and starts up in three seconds though I have noticed the start up time increases slightly if you download more apps. It has Samsung apps which you can use to go on Facebook , you tube, BBC iplayer , love-film and movie rentals e.t.c. The quality of the picture is very good with a very crisp picture the only problem I have with this player is that it says WiFi ready and actually needs a WiFi dongle to connect to the internet, and that WiFi dongle has to be of a specific Samsung brand[...] which costs another £38. Apart from that though I would definitely recommend :)

Easy to use - but with advanced functionality
By @GeekZilla9000
This Samsung BD-D5300 is effectively a newer version of the Samsung BD-C5500 and has similar styling and has touch sensitive buttons for the basic functions on the front attached to a touch sensitive strip (though this eventually peeled off from my old BD-C5500 thanks to a 6 month old baby!)The player was incredibly easy to set up - it's basically plug-and-play, but it doesn't come with an HDMI cable so you'll need to get one ready. The menus offer plenty of low-level settings for you to configure such as frames per second and default audio, but I suspect most users will be happy to simply plug it in and accept the default settings. As with the last generation of Samsung players, most settings provide a brief text description of what you are adjusting so that less techie folk can feel fairly confident with what they are seeing.I don't have a fancy home cinema set up so I can't really comment on how well this performs with full surround sound - but those watching on a 'standard' TV will be pleased with the results. The picture is incredibly clear - as you expect - and movement is good. I noticed that older Samsung players struggled with films which had subtitles, it cause the film to stutter and it was quite noticeable, but there are no issues like that here. Upscaled DVDs are noticeably better than a standard DVD player and the Samsung loads disks very quickly. I also watch films stored on an external hard disk and SD card, by plugging the hard disk or card reader into the USB port on the front I was able to watch video files and view photos taken by my digital camera.Online content was a novelty a few years ago but is becoming an essential expectation these days and by hooking this up to your Broadband router using an Ethernet cable you can access quite a few online providers via the Samsung Apps option. BBC iPlayer works brilliantly - the interface is the same as my BT Vision box, but the Samsung has the benefit of streaming in both Standard and High Definition and HD. I watched a wildlife documentary and switched between SD and HD, the difference is noticeable and seeing as I don't have Freeview HD or Sky I'll probably purposefully miss some programme snow and catch up with them in High-Def via the BBC iPlayer. There are many more apps providing content too including some free ones such as YouTube (which is a bit fiddly compared to the actual website) and Blinkbox which enables you to watch some films for free or rent premium titles. Other than BBC iPlayer the most important inclusions are LOVEFiLM and Netflix. I'm not a Netflix subscriber but I do use LOVEFiLM - setting it up takes just a few moments and I was able to browse it easily and select films, but it doesn't seem as stable as the Sony LOVEFiLM service and often 'stuck' on the buffering screen and wouldn't advance. In a nutshell: My previous Samsung player had a couple of issues which seem to have been resolved here along with the expected performance enhancements - disk loading is quicker, it's quieter, and the menus are a bit prettier (though they were pretty before too). This is a perfect purchase for those wanting either wanting just a basic player because it is simple to set-up and use, and is also suitable for anyone wanting to connect online to access more content. BBC iPlayer works incredibly well and is of course free to use. Those wanting 3D may want to pay a bit more for the Samsung BD-D5500 which is the same player as far as I can tell but with 3D capabilities. At less than £100 (at the time of writing this) it's hard to give this anything less than 5 stars.

Full-featured and good value
By T
Having binned the VCR that's never used any more I thought, "Hmm - I've got a spare shelf in the cabinet. I know - let's stick a BluRay in there!" So, I filtered out the known low quality brands and the brands I've never heard of and so don't know their quality and this one stuck out from the small selection that was left. It seems to do everything - including playing movies in .avi format burned en masse to DVD-R. Picture quality is excellent through an HDMI cable on an LG 42" LCD HD ready TV. The HD upscaling on DVD picture quality is crisp and the BluRay picture is stunning (although I've only watched one BD on it at this time). Out of the box it's very easy to connect up (put on shelf, plug HDMI cable in, plug power lead into wall socket, press On/Off button on remote) and a doddle to configure, with clear on-screen prompts to initially set language and tell it whether or not you're putting it on the internet. Internet access is for enhanced BD features and Smart technology and can be via Ethernet cable or Wi-Fi to your router, and also allows access to online services such as BBC iPlayer. However, even though the box and catalogue blurb screams "Wi-Fi" at you it is actually only "wi-fi ready" when you check the small print in the same way all those TVs were "HD ready" - you have to buy more bits to actually use the functionality. Personally, I'd like devices that are going to shout "Wi-Fi!!!!" at you to be required to actually have the functionality built in to the device but until that day you have to buy the Samsung special wi-fi adaptor to use it. And therein I fail to see the point. Maybe in the future but at the moment I'm going to give putting my BD player on the internet a miss.It plays BD, DVD, CD and as an added bonus it'll play DVD-R/RW with both DVD format and - and this is the Brucie bonus - DivX format movies burned on the disk (that's the aforementioned .avi). On CD it'll play .mp3/.wma files and appears to do the same from USB stick, too - although I've not tried either (a USB stick also enables the installation of firmware updates downloaded from the Samsung website). Dolby and DTS are supported and the sound is nice - although that is also largely reliant on the quality of the TVs speakers and amplifier. However, there is a composite L/R/Video output that could be used to feed the audio to a surround sound/home cinema box.All in all, this player comes "fully loaded" and is not an unreasonable price. I'm pleased with it.Update April 2012:- I plugged in a USB stick this weekend with two movies, one an .avi, one an .mp4. Both were recognised, came up on the selection menu and both played perfectly.Update May 2012:- Lamenting the lack of 12v bus on my DV-Rs USB port I plugged a My Passport HDD into the BD player this weekend. And up it span! I was able to browse movies, music and images with ease and discovered that .mkv files also play (although without the option to switch on embedded subtitles where present). I become more and more convinced that I landed a really good buy with this machine.
