Does the essentials perfectly

Following the failure of my latest Samsung BD player, I thought I would give one of the 'premium' brands a go so invested in the Denon which Amazon had for a great price.My priority was a player which produces great 2D & 3D visuals and is reliable and easy to use. The Denon does not dissapoint. The 'extras' in terms of internet & streaming functionality are limited to a DLNA client and a You Tube player. I will never use these so was not bothered, but if that's your priority I would advise you look elsewhere.The Denon feels well built and I'm confident this could last years with no problems.Blurays looks stunning in both 2d and 3d. I am using it through a Yamaha AV receiver which does most of the work in terms of decoding. Latest firmware update at the time of writing was dated 01.02.2012 and I have had no issues with compatibility playing any movies.The remote is also decent and intuitive. It comes with the thickest manual I have ever seen although fortunately I have not needed it. Really decent player, for a great price. You get more for your money in terms of extras with some other brands, but I'm certain they will not produce images as good as the Denon, just my opinion of course. Recommended

Beautiful picture and sound, I had to get mine repaired

There are many good things to say about this Denon device. For one, it was straightforward to set up. As far as the colours go, they looked washed out on our giant plasma screen, but it was easy to navigate through the menus to change the settings to give a better colour profile than at our local cinema (I was surprised to find the hobbits in "Lord of the Rings" are wearing green cloaks, not mud-brown ones, although I don't suppose many people are going to think that is interesting). The sound is very good, although I have not played it through the hifi which would give a better test than the TV's speaker system. All the disks we have played do run smoothly, without juddering or hanging up; so much better than our previous Blu-ray player.The bad thing is that it has started vibrating quite strongly and loudly when playing some Blu-rays. It has been sent off to Denon for repair but apparently this will take up to a month. A month without movies is too long for my family so we will have to buy another player in the interim.UPDATEIt is now back from being repaired at Denon and I have it's sound going through a Naim amplifier and speakers - and both sound and visuals are just AMAZING! So it was worth the nuisance of sending it back to be repaired and I am very pleased I got it. As it is really better than I had ever expected a player to be, I think it has earned 5 stars despite the reliability issue.
