Decent Blu-ray player for price
By Braintree fan
I purchased this after having had a Samsung DVD recorder which impressed me with it's upscaling qualities. This player is of the basic - no frills variety and the low price matches. On unboxing I upgraded the firmware and then following some instructions involving a harmony remote control very quickly opened up the DVD regions. When powering up for the first time you see an attractive onscreen guide to set things up, this was a breeze even for a simpleton like me and took all of about 30 seconds. In this mini road test, I tried a bought DVD, then a burnt DVD, a bought CD, a burnt CD and of course a Blu-ray disc, the unit played the lot without issue. I then tried a CD burnt with mp3 files and after selecting music and play, away that went as well. Then I took the SD card from our Sony handycam and it handled the mpeg2 movie clips problem free. as was the case when we loaded the same movie clips to a USB flash drive and pushed that in the front. As I mentioned at the start this is not one of those all singing or dancing BD players, but everything we threw at it, it handled and I've never had that with either a DVD or BD player previously - maybe I've been unlucky.Start up is just as slow but a bit quieter than my other BD player, but hey, we're not really on a tight time schedule here. DVD upscaling might not be quite as good as with the Samsung DVD recorders, but that was also a more upmarket item when I bought that three years ago - lets say it does a decent job and is better at de-interlacing than my 1080p LG LCD is.This is a very small unit, less than two inches thick, It's the usual width of other makes but only about 8 inches deep and is extremely light, so much so when I braced myself to pick it up, It very near ended up over my shoulder :o)The rear connectors are quite sparse but typical of new generation players - only a single HDMI and a single set of RCA composite connectors. Unless you have access to a free Blu-ray film library and sametime possess an old fasioned non-HDMI TV, why would you really buy a Blu-ray disc player costing 2-3x the price of a DVD player? So you will really need to connect via HDMI to appreciate hi-definition blu-ray discs and access all the benefits of viewing with deep color and 1080p 24fps just like the film studios inteded. The only other hole on the rear panel is for the network cable - cat45 type Then on the neat but uncluttered front panel is that USB port.Remote control is nothing to write home about, but it has all the buttons you need apart from the one needed in the sequence to make the player DVD region free. This is where the logitech harmony comes in. You load that up with the commands from a different Samsung BD remote and then once you've unlocked the regions you can re-program the remote. The player seems quite responsive to remote commands.I never or rarely award products with a 5/5 rating, as imo that rating should only be reserved for that rare and oustanding product, this isn't one of those, but even so is a decent all-rounder. If you want a basic machine for under £70 this may be the one for you.

Average budget player - Firmware update essential
By Danny Boy 99
If this were a DVD player I wouldnt expect it to be priced at more than £25, its definately at the budget end of the market. However being bluray you have to add at least £50 to the price you think it should be worth. The spec is a reflection of the price: basic features, no on-board memory, doesnt play all video formats. The loading speed is very slow. Much slower than the 2 year old LG player it replaced. I tested it out of the box with Avatar and Despicable Me on bluray, and initially thought it was faulty as the video playback on both was very jerky. However after installing the latest firmware it now seems to be fine. If you just want a cheap and basic bluray player, this is decent enough for the price.EDIT - Since writing this review I experienced more issues with jerky playback of new Bluray disks. No new firmware updates available to fix it this time. I sent it back and bought a Sony S380 instead. Disappointing quality from Samsung.

This item does NOT have WiFi
By CB_Marketplace
This is an average DVD / BluRay player. Build quality isn't great but what do you expect for the price. The item was described as "with Wifi". This is wrong, it only supports a wired connection. However, the network functionality via a wired connection is pretty good and it plays most file formats.I did inform Amazon that their description is wrong but the faceless machine just told me to return it. So, if you need WiFi do NOT buy this!
