Neat and impressive
By Rolo
Firstly, just what is the Sony BDVNF720 (don't Sony love these catchy titles)? It's a Blu-ray player with 3D capability. It has built-in Wi-Fi to enable internet services on your TV like YouTube, Lovefilm, Netflix, iPlayer and many others. Basically it makes your TV a `Smart TV'.- It is a '3D' sound system - not strictly surround sound as there are just two front speakers and a sub-woofer.- It also has FM radio (no DAB), a USB input to play a wide range of video and audio formats and separate dock for an iPod or iPhone. It's a neat system, consisting of just four items. The main unit (player and amp) is curvy and low-profile; discs slot load at the side, you need access to the top so you can't stack anything above it. It's a slightly unusual design but the mix of brushed chrome and piano black looks quite classy. The two front speakers are smaller than you might guess from the picture - 15" high and about an 1" deep but they feel quite substantial. Sony declare proudly they are 'Magnetic Fluid' speakers - whatever that means. The heavy sub-woofer is just over a foot high and 15" deep.Set-up is fairly straightforward despite minimal printed documentation but it took a couple of attempts to connect to my home Wi-Fi. Connecting to Lovefilm was slightly irritating as the Lovefilm/Sony connection code displayed on the TV (and entered via Sony's website) was half hidden behind text, meaning I had to guess half the letters, but eventually connection was made and Lovefilm 'instant' movies easily accessible. You can also stream content from your computer (not so easy for Mac users, but possible). So, what does is sound like? Given the small size of the front speakers, remarkably good. Movies sound big and loud with great dynamics and the system really does give a very good sense of space. No, you can't really call it surround sound (Sony call it `S-Force PRO Front Surround' - `front surround'?) but it's as close as you can get with just two speakers and a sub-bass. There's little wrong with it as a reasonably priced home cinema audio system but hi-fi buffs will find it a little too hard and digital for music - it lacks warmth and the top end has what I can only describe as a metallic feel to it. But for movies, which is what it's made for, it's impressive.Blu-ray picture quality is, as you would expect, great - I don't have a 3D TV so I can't comment on 3D capability. DVDs, upscaled to HD, look good too. YouTube and iPlayer are also surprisingly good on an HD TV.Would I recommend it? It's great if you need a good Blu-ray player, don't have a Smart TV with internet capability nor a surround sound system - if you have one of those items already, this may not be the best deal.. The speakers are very neat and the simulated surround sound surprisingly impressive but, personally, I prefer the more natural (if less spacey) sound of a conventional hi-fi system. All-in-all it feels like a quality package and if it fits your requirements, I would highly recommend it.

Home cinema system that changes the way you view TV and film
By H. Eaton
This home system brings TV and films into your home in a whole new way. It's quite simply amazing. The sound is tremendous and the 3D picture is astounding ... you literally feel like you're in the middle of the picture. The system gives you access to a range of services via a wi-fi connection - you can access on demand TV such as BBC iPlayer, 4 on demand etc as well as a range of internet movies and Netflix or LoveFilm if you have an account with one of those providers. For me, one of the best things about this system is how easy it is to install. Instructions are clear, but the installation isn't complicated anyway. It comes in 4 sleek, stylish pieces - a black subwoofer which looks like a computer tower, 2 slim speakers and the main unit which is compact, with a modern, state of the art look and feel. Blu ray disks are inserted to the side of the unit and the digital display adds to the high-tech spec of this system. The speakers can be wall mounted or can simply sit to the side of your TV and there's an iPod dock which charges your device as well as plays your audio through the amazing speakers.Navigation through the menu options is very straight forward once you get the hang of it - which takes a matter of minutes. The only slight trouble I had was accessing Netflix through it - it took me a while to realise I had to link my Netflix account with the unit using a PC rather than doing it through the wifi on the box itself. That's really a small complaint ... now that it's all linked up, it's really easy to use and I absolutely could never again be without it!

What will they think of next...................
By Stromata
Just to get this review into context - we are of an age where we could be rather overwhelmed by technical stuff, having witnessed the coming of BBC2 (making three channels to choose from) and colour television. We have noticed that products of this type are often marketed towards young people, so it was with intense interest that we tried out this Home Theatre System, having eyed them since they appeared in the shops. Our main concern was - would we actually use it, being fairly light television watchers. We have a fairly standard 34" flat screen tv with a Freeview box.The good points:The whole outfit looks very stylish, think Bang and Olufsen. It's very easy to set up. It comes with the usual black and white booklet in a variety of languages and also a really useful little colour pamphlet called 'Start here' which is a series of clear photographs, so something of an idiots-guide to setting up,making the whole set-up quick and stress free. The only extra we had to purchase a 'HDMI' cable (bought from Curry's for about £30.00) so we could link in the internet. The quality of sound produced is astounding! TV programmes, especially those with a high music content, DVD's and music CD's are like never before. We listen to the radio via it and it is fantastic to have BBC iPlayer, Youtube, Lovefilm streaming etc on the tv rather than the laptop. Indeed you do not need a computer at all to see BBC iPlayer etc as this is all built in - you just need an internet connection (we have BT Broadband and live in a rural area so the signal is not 'strong', but we have no problem receiving services). Once you know which buttons to press it is all so very easy - and this comes from someone who is not techinally-minded at all.So, do we actually use it? You bet! Over the weeks we have been using this our viewing has been enhanced beyond our expectations. Very highly recommended.
