5Great box, great remote
By tallpete33
Whilst looking for a new DVD player I came across this item and was happy to go with Sony again seeing as my last one gave good service for 10 years. As it was to connect to my little portable CRT in the bedroom a SCART connector was needed and an HDMI not. This fits the bill perfectly with ease of use, decent (if unspectacular) appearance and an excellent remote control. The remote has a quality feel to it and is uncluttered and with big clear buttons which older people would definitely find an advantage. It has basic functions for (Sony) TV control also.Power on is quite slow but performance is then superb for a machine at this price and there is no annoying (and energy wasting) red standby LED to keep me awake at night either. The drive tray does look a bit slight but it's not a cup holder so shouldn't be a problem with normal use. I'm surprised at the number of reviewers moaning about the lack of SCART lead as very little kit does come with them and they are as cheap as chips to buy anyway but there you go.It is well worth noting that this item can currently be currently had for well under thirty pounds on the High St though (you know, the place where you have to fill in the paper slips) so shop around before clicking...

4Unbeatable, for the money...
By Tim Kidner
Currently 26.99 at a certain High Street catalogue-style store that everyone's heard of, when it came to a very necessary replacement for my old dvd player. Not having budgeted for a brand new one and with Christmas soon, my budget was almost nil. So, chancing through this Argos catalogue online, saw this Sony and thought 'rubbish!', 'Sony must have really let themselves go, or be so desperate as to almost give them away'. Reading the almost all five star reviews there, I thought 'yes, but Amazon will be cheaper - they always are!' Nope, not by a long chalk and the beauty was that I could reserve it and pick it up (for free) and play a film within the hour! So, it comes in a half-size box and the player is small and light. About 1/3rd size of the old Panasonic and an absolute fraction of the weight. About half the height, too. What's WRONG with it?Firstly - and most noticeably, there's no display. At all. No counter, so you either set a stop-watch or just watch the film, without knowing. Frustrating if you want to know when a boring film is going to end. I'm finding this, on the second day of using it, the biggest drawback but I suppose it allows the much smaller dimensions and low cost. I even go so far as to minus a star because of it.Secondly - the controls, on the top front edge of the player, are hard and far from tactile. Not nice at all and not reassuring. The draw action is quite noisy, not from the motor but from the sliding of the horrible cheap plastic tray as it comes out.Thirdly - I was always going to lose a couple of features from my old Panasonic, I knew that. The one that I sometimes use was a 'virtual surround sound' option and no, the Sony doesn't have this, in any shape or form (I know friends' - bigger - Sony units feature this). Something I'm just going to have to get used to.Fourthly - the power lead is ridiculously short - haven't measured it, it's one that's wired into the machine, but you need a socket almost next to the player. What's RIGHT about it?The picture and sound quality. In a nutshell, it knocks spots off the Panasonic, even DVDs recorded on a Panasonic DVD recorder look and play better on the Sony than on the machine that recorded them! Playing the final Harry Potter film, the fighting magic wand scenes are superb, full of life - sharp and bright but with excellent shadow details, no murky depths here, whilst the sound belied its stereo origins filling my room (OK, it's through decent hi-fi separates) with an excellent dynamic range, yet the subtlest of sounds could equally be heard, clearly. The machine seems to play the most scratched discs without fuss, too.Disc memory - the machine 'bookmarks' up to six discs, presumably in date order. This helps offset the lack of a time-counter as it'll recommence automatically where you stopped it. My old Panasonic didn't have this, so very useful. It seems to do this with both commercial ones as well as home-recorded, something I was wondering about.Subtitle button - I watch (& review on Amazon and on IMDB) a lot of world cinema movies and whilst one usually accesses subtitles via the menu, some discs, especially if they are sourced from overseas, can be a real bu&&er to set, some impossible. The subtitle button shows which options are available as the movie is playing. A feature I used a lot on the Panasonic, I would have really hated not having it again, but, yes, the Sony features it.Remote Control - I've really only had Panasonic before and still use one of their TVs but I have to say that the remote, in both layout and quality/feel seems to belong to a higher-spec model. Quite small but a testament to logic and simplicity.Price - this could equally be at the top of the 'For' list as it is here. There are only a handful of cheaper makes and models, all with names we know we should avoid, if we can. The Alba's and such of this world are never featured in trendy feature films and may be OK for occasional viewing etc but here, Sony have kept the feature that they're most known for, sheer quality. It won't last as long, true, as their better built models and nobody will ever repair it - it's almost a disposable Sony, but it certainly got me the quality I wanted but at a price that's too damned low to ignore.

5cheap and functional
By Allan Hildon
I bought this because my two year old Philips DVD player lost its ability to read LoveFilm's rubbish DVDs. As I have the privilege of living in one of our great nation's broadband not spots, I will have to suffer DVDs for a few more years yet. Fortunately this machine copes much better and has a vastly superior remote control, which even a remote-o-phobe like me can operate. It only has a scart outlet but that's OK for my 10 year old Sony CRT flat screen telly (which still has a better picture than most LCD/LED screens which cost less than a £1000). Wish all my technology problems were this easily sorted.
